Game Background

Quote:
The Tolen Empire went out, not with a roar, but with a shrug and a sigh. The old thing just laid down and passed into history. Historians have been trying to fix a date the empire fell apart, but the truth is, the cracks, rot, ruin started long before most people could see the fall coming. For decades the empire had grown lazy, slow, ineffective, and morally corrupt and thus for decades it had been slowly dying. The fact this toxic corruption finally killed the Empire should not be seen as something surprising for real historians. And real historians understand a date would trivialize the Empire’s passing.
- Aster Mardale III, Royal Historian in the Gargal Red Court

The Tolen Empire fell after many years of economic ruin. Neither civil war nor internal coup could break the Empire. But the weight of its own size broke it’s back. As it came apart various worlds scrambled to salvage what they could. Hundreds of pocket factions developed. Some as small as a single world, others covered dozens. This period created a mix of technological levels as some worlds lost the ability to support various tech while others maintained their ability to manufacture and even make further developmental advances.

Quote:
We need to stop this, we need trade. There will be trade, and the trade will keep us from failing as a race. If the Empire will not help, then this company will. Arm the ships.
- Sam Goodall, Charman of the Board of Goodall Shipping and founder of the Starlane Mercantile Confederation.

As the fracturing of the Empire slowed, various factions began to consolidate. As time passed these factions became more and more powerful. Some grew by force, others by religious expansion, still others by mutual need. The time of consolidation saw an increase in interest in exploration as well. Outer systems were explored and charted. Today there are twelve main factions that control most of what was once the Tolen Empire. While there are a few systems that have not joined one faction or another, they have all aligned themselves with one for protection.

The one exception is the Dark System.

Quote:
...the Dark System. Well it is a subject that could take it’s own class. Part myth, part real, and all against the laws of physics as we know them. But to give a very brief, and unfairly short, answer to your question: The Dark System is a sector we know has at least one sun and quite a few planets. We know it has been the focus of at least twenty various exploration attempts. We also know at least three military fleets attempted to enter the system. In each case the ships went in and were never heard from again. All probes stop sending once they cross into what is now the charted boarder of the Dark System. But this is where the myth and facts start to blend. Each long range survey comes up with different data. No one the same. And the locals all claim some stuff does come out once in a while, but no real proof has ever come to light. It is a data black hole without the black hole. But to get back onto the subject at hand.....
- Professor Shen, Astrophysics Professor at the Angorian Naval Academy.

The Game:

So here is the idea. I want us to create a background for various games to be played in. This will be a collaborative effort. We will work together to build the background and while we are at it create some SciFi based figures too. To do so I will offer an assignment once a week for twelve weeks. I will post that assignment on Sunday night my time (Pacific Standard). A dead line will be given at that time.

Some assignments will be easy, some hard. But all will be designed to develop more then just your drawing skills. Some will require you to write something (it does not have to be perfect though Wink ). Some will require something to be drawn other then just tanks and troops, thought we will do those as well. This effort will run, if there is the enough interest, for 12 weeks.

Ok, so what will we all get from this? I hope fun. But what else? Well this will also be a contest. Each week you will be given a score and the totals given to date. At the end of the twelve weeks we will declare a winner of the contest.

But that is not all. I am going to collect everything we do and make a PDF out of it. So anyone who puts in some effort will get a copy of the collected outcome as well. That way you could use it for RPGs, War Games, what ever you wish. This will become “our background”.

At this point I want to know who is in? All I need is a PM by Sunday (September 21st) morning my time to let me know you are in and a number from the faction list / map I will post later on this thread. At this point you do not have to have a name for your faction, but if you do please feel free to let me know that as well. I will post the first assignment at that point.

Ok, I can hear some say, but I do not want to commit for twelve weeks. I understand. Feel free to watch and enjoy. I think this could be a fun ride.

Lastly some basic ground rules for this contest:

1) All basic Junior General Rules apply to what we do.

2) You can not write or depict something that negatively impacts another faction without that faction owner’s agreement. Example: Bob thinks it would be a great idea for Daniel’s faction to have a on going rebellion. Great, as long as Daniel agrees, but Bob would need to get Daniel’s OK first. Then he could add it into something he is doing.

3) You are also free to do other things besides the assignment, explore and have fun. Develop ideas that will give your factions a life of their own. But if later assignments touch on something you already did on the Tolen thread, please take the opportunity to enhance it. Add to it, develop it more. Have some fun with it. Let what others may have done to inspire you.

4) Please remember this is first being done for fun. Do not stress over it. Join in, but relax and have fun.
